Vitamin X
is a secret vitamin that only a few scientists know anything about, including whether it
exists or not. Since we are not one of them, we are free to pretty much make up whatever
we want about it. So here goes: it was discovered in 1989, in a state-of-the-art
laboratory hidden high in the Swiss Alps, from an extract of a special Swiss lichen called
Nederglocken Flower. No one knows why it's called a flower, although it is
reputed (at least, it is now) that once every century, this lichen blossoms throughout
this secret valley in huge flowers in a glorious rainbow of colors. One dose of Vitamin X
restores perfect health to anyone who takes it in good faith. This, of course,
rules out quite a few people, but that's okay because it's unlikely that they will ever
come near it.
