Oat Seed
(Avena sativa) Antispasmodic; soothes and supports nervous system; for depression,
insomnia hysteria, irritation, anxiety. Helpful in breaking addictions.
Oat Straw is said to promote healthy
skin. Traditionally it has been used during times of insomnia, anxiety, and
depression. Some herbalists consider Oat Straw to be a superb tonic for the whole
system, helpful for both physical and nervous fatigue. It has also been used for
colds, especially if recurrent or persistent. Octacosanol was
identified by Professor Thomas Cureton at the University of Illinois as the component of
wheat-germ oil that improved strength, reaction time, and endurance. His studies were
conducted over a 20-year period and involved weightlifters, swimmers, wrestlers, and track
and field athletes. Octacosanol is a solid white alcohol, whose exact mechanism of action
is still unknown, although some evidence suggests it works to improve the efficiency of
transmission of nerve impulses. This came from studies showing that patients with Lou
Gehrigs disease and Parkinson's reported some gradual improvements in neuro-muscular
coordination when taking octacosanol. Many customers who run, bike, or engage in other
endurance sports have reported a strengthening and steadying effect from
octacosanol.

Ornithine is a natural amino acid not found in
proteins. Produced in the body from L-arginine, L-ornithine can be converted back into
L-arginine or into L-glutamic acid or L-proline. It plays a role in stimulating the
release of growth hormone, insulin and other hormones. Growth hormone stimulates overall
protein production and is mildly fat burning, by causing fat cells to release free fatty
acids and the liver to increase the rate of fat burning. Pearson and Shaw, in Life
Extension, suggest that L-ornithine is effective against autoimmune arthritis and
against the formation of tumors in mice. It also is thought to be helpful in reducing
fatty deposits in arteries, stimulating wound healing through stimulation of growth
hormone release, and regenerating the liver. Large quantities of L-ornithine may be
tolerated differently by different people according to their biochemical individuality.
L-ornithine may increase the severity of symptoms in some schizophrenics.
Osha Root (Ligusticum
porterii) Strong
